Safe Tanning Tips For A Healthy Summer Glow

Beach days are in fact the best days but without safety precautions they could become your worst days so ensure you tan safely too by following these simple yet crucial tips.

Nothing beats a lazy day at the beach, when you’re lying in the sun and working on your tan, with the sand in your toes, the wind in your hair and a chilled piña colada in your hand.

And whilst lying in the sun has many benefits, including replenishing your vitamin D levels, killing certain types of bad bacteria in your body, lowering your blood pressure and benefiting certain types of skin disorders, by now, you should know that too much sun, without the right precautions, can be dangerous.

We’ve all been there before – accidentally dozing off while tanning, only to wake up to red patches and a brutal case of sunburn. But fear not, ladies! If spray tan is not your cup of tea, you can get the perfect tan without getting sunburnt.

The first step – and you’ve probably heard this a hundred times before but we simply have to reinforce it – is to ensure that you have the right sunscreen. SPF 30 is the bare minimum, but the higher the SPF, the better it is for you. While high-SPF sunscreens may resulting in a slower tanning process than you would like, trust us when we say that it is better to be safe than to be sorry! If you’re going to be tanning at the beach or by the pool, ensure that you are equipped with a water-resistant sunscreen, and make sure that you reapply it every few hours.

It’s also important to remember that every type of skin has a cut-off point beyond which it simply will not produce more melanin, meaning that you will not get more tanned. For most people, this cut-off point is somewhere between two and three hours, so there is no point in hanging out in the sun for hours on end – you’re simply exposing your skin to the risk of being burnt or worse.

If you’re prone to burning easily (and even if you’re not) it is important to take regular breaks from tanning. Make sure that you step out of the sun and seek some shade regularly – every twenty to thirty minutes is ideal. This will give your skin a break from the sheer intensity of the sunrays and reduce the chance of getting sunburnt, meaning that your tan will look healthier and last longer. It’s a win-win situation, really.

No matter what you take with you to the beach, never, ever, EVER forget to carry a wide-brimmed hat and your sunglasses to protect your face. The sunglasses will shade your eyes, which are extremely sensitive to UV rays while the wide-brimmed hat will protect your scalp, nose, ears and forehead – the parts that we often forget when applying sunscreen.

Finally, remember that no matter how much you love your tan, it is not safe to be exposed to the harsh rays of the sun for extended hours every single day. If you simply cannot live without a tan, consider spray tanning for a healthier and more sustainable glow. Your skin will thank you later.
